Your Wedding Photographer Doesn't Have to Be a Wedding Photographer
Hear us out.
Your photographer doesn’t necessarily have to be a wedding photographer.
They might shoot concerts. Street photography. Nature. Fashion. Documentary.
What matters? Can they photograph YOUR day?
Before you hire someone—wedding photographer or not—look for these three things:
1. Can they handle natural light?
Outdoor weddings don’t come with controlled lighting.
Look for someone who can work with:
Harsh sunlight
Unexpected shadows
Overcast days
Golden hour
Changing outdoor conditions
Different lighting from one location to the next
Tip: Don’t just look at the pretty sunset photos. Look for photos taken in harsh midday sun, deep shadows, cloudy skies, or mixed light and see how they turned out.
2. Do they notice what’s happening around you?
You want the big moments, obviously.
But what about everything else?
Look for photos that capture:
Small, unexpected moments
Interesting surroundings
Architecture and landscape
People being themselves
Details you might have missed
The feeling of the location
A great photographer doesn't just photograph you standing somewhere beautiful. They know how to make the place part of the story.
3. Can they capture movement?
Your wedding isn't a photo shoot.
You're going to walk. Laugh. Hug. Dance. Move through the city. Maybe run across a street.
Look for:
People walking instead of always posing
Natural expressions
Clothing and hair in motion
Candid interaction
Sharp action shots
Photos that actually feel alive
And here's the bigger point:
Don't hire the label. Hire the eye.
Wedding photographer. Music photographer. Street photographer. Documentary photographer.
Look at their work and ask yourself:
Can this person tell our story the way we want it told?
That's the part that matters.
There’s more than one way to get married.
